Autobiography
My name is Christopher Nathan Geary, and I was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 8, 1971. In October 1978 my mother and I moved to Omaha. One week after graduating from high school in 1990, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. While I was stationed at Camp Pendleton near San Clemente, Calif., I began studying Kempo Karate at a martial arts school a couple of miles from base.
After four years in the Marine Corps, I was honorably discharged in May 1994 with the rank of Corporal (E4). I returned to Omaha, where I began teaching the martial arts on June 29, 1994 and would later become the Founder/President of Christopher N. Geary's Shaolin Kempo Karate. In November 1995 I received my first-degree black belt, and also was acknowledged as a Sensei (Instructor). Over the next twelve years I was promoted to successively higher black belt rankings by internationally recognized martial artists. I also received international recognition, including Hall of Fame awards from three different martial arts organizations.
Since I began teaching martial arts, I have appeared on local television shows presenting self-defense tips for those who could not afford classes. In my presentations I have stressed the importance of being aware of one's surroundings in order to react quickly and effectively in threatening situations. I have also been actively involved in the community, volunteering my time to teach self-defense to the disabled, to provide free safety awareness classes to young children, and to raise money for children with cancer. Colleges here in Nebraska have invited me to give seminars in which students gained confidence by learning simple, effective techniques to protect themselves from date rape, mugging, and other types of assault. In recognition of my contributions to the martial arts, Governor Dave Heineman presented me with a proclamation honoring October 15, 2005 as National Martial Arts Day in Nebraska.
On September 1, 2006, I was promoted to 10th-degree black belt (the highest level available in the martial arts). My promotion made me the second youngest Judan (tenth-degree black belt) Grandmaster in the world at age 35, and the youngest person in the United States to achieve this rank through legitimate means.
There are two Christopher N. Geary's Shaolin Kempo Karate schools in the Omaha metro area. My students include both adults and children. At this point in my life I am still single, but I hope to marry and have a family of my own someday. In the meantime, I appreciate the opportunity to bring a positive influence to the lives of young people through my teaching. In a way, the kids I teach are all "my kids."
In addition to teaching karate and running my business, my interests include writing, photography, art, music, and travel. Although I have not yet held a public office, I have been interested in politics for several years. I decided to run for State Senator because I want to play a part in shaping the future of Nebraska.
